Status
Initial meeting on 13 Feb 2010, during BaB Meeting.
Aims
- Review what commonly used software is available from the commercial world. List examples.
- Review what similar software applications are available from the open source world.
- Review what kinds of hardware and interfaces are around.
- List the stable OSS apps, indentify whats a waste of time and what's missing.
- Find out where to get support, learn to use these tools.
Scope
This StudyGroup will probably limit itself to a search of what is currently available.
Interested Parties
Ideally the group will consist of people from several backgrounds.
- People who know the world of commercially available software sufficiently well to describe it without too much effort.
- People who know where to look + how to search for high-value, quality, OpenSourceSoftware projects.
- Current users or developers of music or audio software or hardware.
- People who've been personally researching with aims similar to this study group.

- During 2010 - 11 School music classes will include use of Sibelius, Logic, Reason applications.
- I have a neighbour that uses Apple Mac's in Music Education at Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM), Guildford . He has talked about development projects using Linux, but he doesn't know anyone closer than Swindon that could get involved in such projects. I am probing for any interest in Surrey.
- Another neighbour that provides Audio/Visual systems + Sound Engineer services for a range of events from Family Gatherings to major band tours. He is interested in using music recording, editing and control/queueing apps.
- Bryn at Red Hat, July 2007 - is said to be very interested in music using linux
- DesmondA, July 2007 - voiced an interest in music software (after AnthonyR's FAVE report)
- AnthonyR, August 2009 - I've installed music s/w for my daughter but want to learn how to use it fluently
- JohnW, July 2007 - believed to be interested (check with him)
- Several Sussex LUG members are active users of linux music (and production) software
- BTW a couple of speakers at FAVE would be interested in speaking or performing at Surrey LUG meetings

OSS Software:
- Ardour - Ardour's intention is to provide digital audio workstation software suitable for professional use. Record, Mix, Edit, Master.
- Ardour on Wikipedia
- Audacity - a cross-platform digital audio editor and recording application. It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD.
- LilyPond is a computer program for music notation + scoring. One of LilyPond's major goals is to produce scores that are engraved with traditional layout rules, reflecting the era when scores were engraved by hand.
- Ubuntu Studio - multimedia editing/creation flavour of Ubuntu. It is aimed at the audio, video and graphic enthusiast as well as professional. Some of the included sound apps that did function are Aconnectgui, Ardour, Audacity, BEAST, Creox c, Gtick, Hydrogen, the Jack family, Mixxx, MusE, PureData, QAMix, QSynth, Rosegarden, Seq24, SooperLooper, Sound Recorder, terminatorX, VKeyBd, XMMS, and ZynAddSubFX.

- Planet CCRMA - (pronounced karma) is a collection of RPM's to help optimize a Linux workstation for audio/video work.
- MailList2010Jan - List of apps and extracts from MailList pooling peoples experiences.
Time Investment
- Two evening meetings and some time researching.
- It is anticipated that this group will hold an initial meeting to start the StudyGroup, expected duration: two hours.
- The members of the group will spend aprox one evening or four hours in research over a two week period.
- The group will hold a follow-up meeting to share and discuss findings, and decide on the next step.
