BringABox Saturday 8 March 2008
Present:
Around 20 people from Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire.
Location:
Lecture Theatre A, University of Surrey, Guildford
Topics:
Usually we have a presentation before lunch, but somehow we never got round to it and the morning was filled with computers and social chat. Some of us drifted away to the student bar for lunch and a little liquid fortification before...
...Adam Trickett gave a presentation about the file system hierarchy.
Those who've already used Linux probably think there's nothing more to learn, once you know where your home directory is, /etc and /var/log. Adam showed us there's quite a bit more to it! Rather like the kid who'd been speaking English for years and then discovered there's grammar!
This was followed by a presentation by Adrian Bridgett on troubleshooting, introducing tools such as strace and tcpdump.
